What not to miss in Pondicherry

  • Stroll through the cobbled, tree lined boulevards and almost imagine being in rural France. Enjoy the cleanest seaside promenade in India.

  • Take a trip with a French- speaking rickshaw driver to one of the superb restaurants in town. The choice of cuisine is amazing; classic French, Vietnamese, Chinese, various regional Indian styles –or just settle for a perfect croissant and fresh coffee.

  • Policemen in their de Gaulle style kepis

  • Shopping – a treasure trove of handcrafts.

  • Auroville – an ashram founded by Mirra Alfassa, a Parisian painter, musician and mystic and her partner Sri Aurobindo, a religious philosopher. This ‘new age’ centre is populated by ex-pats and long- stay Europeans searching for ‘inner peace’. Attractive, experimental housing, organic husbandry and craft centre.

  • Gingee Fort, Tamil Nadu’s most spectacular ruin, set on a landscape of huge boulder hills interspersed with rice paddy and banana plantations. Three separate citadels crowning 3 dramatic hills are connected in a triangle by 20m thick walls. A network of raised, paved paths provides the link. A pyramidal tower crowns an ingenious hydraulic system which carried water to the upper levels. A steep climb up in the heat, but rewarded by a spectacular view.
