Overview of Madras/Chennai

When to go

Chennai’s climate is referred to as ‘hot, hotter then hottest’; December - February are the coolest months

May / June can be unbearably hot

What not to miss in Madras/Chennai

The coastal village of Mamallapuram (30miles south) with exquisite Pallava rock-cut architecture of the 5th-9th century and still a centre for stone carving.

The temple town of Kanchipuram (43miles north west). The largest temple, Ekambaresvara, is dedicated to Siva. The town’s silk weavers are renowned for their skill in weaving saris of the most beautiful colours and intricate designs.

Crocodile Bank (closed Mondays) was set up in 1974 to protect the indigenous crocodiles, but now works to save other endangered species from around the world.

The Boutique India team have visited Chennai and a detailed review is coming soon.
