What not to miss in Kovalam

  • Hawah beach where the local fishermen haul their massive nets through the shallows, singing and chanting, viewed from the Sea Rock Terrace.

  • Wander through the cool coconut groves behind Lighthouse beach and view village life, seemingly untouched by tourists’ presence; but please cover up and respect local industry.

  • Head north beyond the Samudra Beach, leaving behind the holiday makers, and visit Pozhikkara Beach, home to a mixed community of Hindu fisherman and Christian coir makers.

  • A modern pink mosque on the edge of the village of Vizhinjam (Virinyam) beyond Lighthouse Beach; unusually in Kerala this is the site of an age-old unease between the Muslim and Hindu mix of villagers. The village is home to a number of ancient shrines.

  • Venture beyond Kola’s most famous beaches to find peace, serenity at the two delightful boutique properties – the eco-friendly Surya Samudra Beach Garden and Lagoon Davina.

Karikkathi Beach House: a private villa on a private beach with its own staff - perfect for the ultimate romantic break

Kovalam is a small beach town and the main tourist destination of Trivandrum's southern coast. The sea can be rough at times and not ideal for bathing. However, the sunsets are magnificent and if you are willing to travel South about 80km to Cape Comarin, of an evening you can enjoy the fabulous sunsets or sunrise. This is the point where the 3 oceans meet and on occassion you can visibly see the 2 dividing lines where the tides / currents meet.

Kovalam is probably one of the best beaches of Kerala and in fact India, but then India is not really a beach location (aside from Goa) so keep it in perspective.

There are a number of stylish boutique hotels and beach villas in this region including Surya Samudra, Travancore Heritage, and Karikkathi Beach House.

There are few stand alone restaurants in Kovalam but the many hotels do welcome non-residents, like The Leela. Trivandrum is the capital of Kerala and quite a buzzing town with commercial shops and banks.  An ideal location if you are seeking a sari to take home or for a special occasion.
