What not to miss in Varanasi

Sarnath - Buddhist centre of temples and temples where Buddha gave his first sermon.

What to miss:

Bathing in the River Ganges - it's incredibly polluted so stick to a boat trip.

Located in the east of Uttar Pradesh, along the banks of the River Ganges, Varanasi is regarded as the holiest Hindu city in the world.  Pilgrims visit the ghats (stone steps) to pray and bathe in the Ganges to absolve their sins.

For those with a genuine interest in Hinduism and spiritualism, Varanasi provides a fascinating and rewarding visit.  Others may find the experience a little voyeuristic, and there are few other sights in the city to spend time visiting; if you feel you may share this view perhaps reconsider visiting, as Varanasi is a long detour from most itineraries.

While there are a handful of luxury hotels in Varanasi, accommodation is mainly somewhere to lay your head and there are no boutique hotels or characterful properties to be found at present.
