Are you a romantic with a touch of the adventurous or just a workaholic needing to recharge your batteries? This retreat in the cool hills of South India beckons to you. In an area known as the most beautiful part of Kerala, a 150 acre plantation of coffee and cardamom, complete with boulder strewn mountain streams washing down a ravine is dotted with a ‘tribal village’ of ethnic huts and cottages. Keralan style buildings from local stone, wood and tiles blend perfectly with their wild environment, whilst carefully hiding their modern comforts. Walls in white or soft earthy tones, rich gleaming timber floors and simple ‘folksy’ drapes and bedspreads soften the borders between inside and out.

Stone pathways lead between the cottages, verandas are open to the magnificent views, and the surrounding forest is home to an unimaginable list of colourful native birds and butterflies.

Enjoy sunny mornings in the swimming pool, dare each other to cross the long, swaying bridge, tone up in the health club, challenge in the games room and de-stress in the spa and ayurveda centre.

The restaurant is considered multi-cuisine, but is heavily Keralan, so be prepared to try some new tastes. Local cuisine is gentle, tasty and colourful.

Once a region where the Colonials escaped the sticky, summer, coastal temperatures, it is being rediscovered by modern travellers in search of unspoiled, off the beaten track special places.

Mornings are crisp, then sunny and warm, late afternoon and evenings may be misty – a light fleece or sweatshirt might be adviseable for comfort. And when it rains, it really rains.

Highs Lows

• Unspoilt nature, not too “resorty”.

• Wonderful views both near and far.

• Excellent Spa with a wide array of treatments.

• The region is becoming a centre for off-road cycling.

• Breathtaking drive up from the coast, and a distant view of the sea once reaching the plateau.

• Be prepared for cool temperatures – don’t pack for tropical weather.

• Food largely Keralan, though special requests will be attempted if given prior notice.

• Restaurant timings are rather rigid and dinner beginning at 8:30pm may be considered late for some.

• Has a children’s play area, but not really a children’s resort unless they are very into trekking and water sports.
