A haveli is a manor house with inner courtyards, usually a status symbol of lesser nobility or rich merchants. The royal town house of the Samode family became a heritage hotel in 1988 and is wonderfully convenient for the local sights and bazaars.

The courtyard is the focal point of the hotel, effervescing the scent of pomegranate and lime trees. Fountains, reflection pools and fairy-lit trees create a very romantic evening.†

With great foresight the house was built facing north to give some respite from the burning Rajasthani sun. An item of historical interest is the elegant ramp at the entrance which was specially constructed for the marriage of a daughter of the house. The rounded steps allowing horses, carriages and elephants easy access for grand events.

There are few elephants at hand today but one of the outstanding features is a spectacular 200 year old†dining room, hand painted from floor to ceiling with roses and dancing girls. Other rooms also feature somewhat less flamboyant frescoes.

A turquoise tiled swimming pool and small sun terrace lies to the rear, coupled with an Ayurvedic spa for guests seeking a†respite from the midday sun.†

The Samode family have 2 further palace/ eco hotels on the outskirts of Jaipur. They are rather more commercial but guests of Samode Haveli may welcome a day/lunch visit.

Grandeur here comes in the ‘faded’ category and the time is ripe for a little face lift. However its small scale and excellent location for sightseeing make it an excellent choice for a low budget base and the new additions of a spa and excellent pool are helping to nudge it into the present day. Despite its shortcomings, it was featured in Sunday Times 5/05 List of 20 top Hip Hotels.

Highs Lows
  • Experience the fun of Sheesh Mahal Suite with its Hindi arches and 360 degree mirrored walls.¬†

  • Friendly social atmosphere between like-minded guests.

  • A boutique hotel in Jaipur with a pool !¬†

  • Central location for a stroll around the crazy bazaars.
  • Pretty gardens are peaceful by day, but at night the city noise can intrude.¬†

  • The spiral staircase in the Haveli Suite is not for the infirm.¬†

  • Some large groups in peak season can dominate the hotel. Avoid the courtyard rooms if you are light sleeper.¬†

  • The monsoon can take its toll on the frescoe paintwork.
