Just outside (7km) the pink city of Jaipur is Raj Vilas, an unusual hotel set within 32 acres of landscaped gardens charmingly dotted with small pavilions. 71 rooms of various categories within the main fort and surrounded by a moat, plus 14 tents set within the gardens. Forget Boy Scouts however, these are teak floored, air conditioned and with decks for sunbathing and dining. A little contrived perhaps, but a different experience for those with a touch of Baden Powell in their soul. The gardens are home to a 251 years old Shiv temple and spa since renovated to a luxury Banyan Spa.

Approach the imposing fort-like frontage of Raj Vilas inspired by Mr Oberoi’s private fort residence, and be welcomed into an interior of elegant rooms, beautiful gardens, villas with private swimming pools, a large Jacuzzi, a swimming pool heated in winter, croquet lawn and a helipad.

A very tranquil setting where sunbathing and yoga are on the daily menu, or venture just 30mins into the bustling pink city for household fashion, jutties and jewellery. There are no twin or interconnecting rooms suitable for young families.

Highs Lows
  • Oberoi’s finesse, style and serenity is a welcome luxury after the pollution and traffic jams of Jaipur and Amber Fort.

  • Chance to experience the savannah tents if your holiday doesn’t stretch to the desert/jungle.
  • The tented villas are slightly contrived in design and can get extremely hot in peak season.

  • The traffic in Jaipur can result in the 12km distance taking 40 mins into the City centre. Morning and dusk times are best.

  • Noise travels from the tents- honeymooners beware!
