Jagat Niwas Palace Hotel began life in the 17th century as a lakeside haveli or manor house. The city of Udaipur has now grown up all around this fertile valley but the haveli still commands a prime position with stunning views across Lake Pichola and the Aravelli Hills. Since the heavy monsoon of 2006, the lake remains full (despite the droughts and bare lake floor mentioned in many out of date guidebooks).

The typical Mewar architecture, less ornamented than the Rajasthani/Mughal style is seen in the many havelis and temples around. The modest entrance is through a narrow archway from a street in the old town, enticing only locals and “the curious”. However an impressive central courtyard and friendly staff await.

This prestigious guesthouse is clean and fresh with simple dťcor in keeping with its†haveli style. A typical layout of rooms around the central courtyard over two floors.

The al fresco terrace dining is the selling point of Udaipur as Lake PIchola provides the excuse to reduce the pace of Rajasthans tourist trail. Grab a coffee and read a book amongst the haveli window seats and cushions.†

The attentive staff are friendly, although language can occasionally be a barrier when requesting western refreshments.†

Jagat Niwas is an excellent budget boutique which way exceeds some of its “supposed” 5 star neighbouring palaces.

Highs Lows
  • Relaxing in the haveli breeze and sinking into a novel.¬†

  • Ideally located for the Lake Palace.¬†

  • Licenced for alcohol.¬†

  • Usually escapes the autumn flooding.
  • No pool but Udaipur is little more than a 2 day visit.¬†

  • The many steep steps are unsuitable for the infirm and children.¬†

  • Noisy pigeons that take roost under haveli windowsills.
